Auto Shippers FAQ: Why Wouldn't I Use The Cheapest Car Shipping Company?

Subscribe November 07, 2013
Car shipping process | Choosing an auto shipper | FAQs

You're moving. It's costing a small fortune to get everything packed up, into the moving van, getting the new place and then moving in. Add to that expense the cost of having your car shipped to your new location. So it's logical to ask: Why wouldn't I use the cheapest car shipping company?

Why Not Cheap Car Shipping?

We all want the least expensive option, but cheap isn't always best. See how long a $5 sweater from a big box discount store lasts compared to a $20 sweater from a department store. One falls apart after one wash, the other can last for more than a year.

The better solution is choosing the best value for the product or service you're buying and auto shipping is no exception. The best value includes not only the bottom-line price but also the services you're getting for that price and that's the difference between a great value and a cheap option.

How to Evaluate Auto Shippers

Before you even start looking at auto transport companies, make a list of questions that need to be answered so you can compare companies on the answers to those questions, including:

Price

Obviously, price is going to be a factor, but should not be the only factor.

Insurance

Does the company have adequate insurance to protect your vehicle while it's in their hands? Lower-cost companies may not have insurance at all, let alone coverage for damage caused while your car is en route to your new location.

Pick-up and delivery

Does the company pick up from your home or from a local lot? Do you receive your vehicle at your new location or do you have to go somewhere to pick it up?

"Hidden" fees

Some less reputable auto transport companies have hidden fees not included in their quotes; asking questions will help you ferret out some of those hidden fees and help you make a decision on whether a company is reputable and worth your business. Hidden fees can include pick-up and delivery fees, loading and unloading fees, hook-up fees, a charge per mile over a certain number of miles, lot fees and state highway charges. Reputable companies will outline all fees, including taxes, right on the quote so there are no surprises when your car is delivered at your new location.

Experience

How much experience does the car transport company have? How long have their drivers been with the company? A company that frequently has new drivers may have a bigger problem underneath, so knowing the length of time each driver has with the company is an important indicator of whether they are reputable or not.

Equipment

What equipment is available from the car shipping company? Do they have both closed and open multi-car trailers or do they only transport one vehicle at a time? There is actually protection using a car moving company that uses a multi-car trailer; the chances are greater for damage to your vehicle if it's the only car being moved on the back of a single trailer.

Take your questions to at least three separate auto transport companies. Gather their answers along with their quotes and look at them side-by-side to determine which is the best value and remember – the cheapest quote is not necessarily the best value.

Testimonials

No issues to report, service was dependable and reliable. Our car was available before the scheduled date! Very much appreciated!
