Car Transport FAQs: Why Can't I Pack My Car When It's Being Transported?

Subscribe September 11, 2013
Car shipping process | Choosing an auto shipper

When you're moving, you want to pack as much of your stuff into as many places as you can so you don't overload your moving van, especially if you're doing it yourself. So if you've hired someone else to move your car, why can't you just load the car up with overflow things and let the car transport company move it for you?

It seems like it would make sense to do that, but it really doesn't. The reasons have to do with cost and safety.

The Weight Of Your Vehicle Matters

Most car transport companies base the price of your transport on the weight of the car; they generally go by standard weight for your car's make and model plus any changes you've made, such as your large sound system or jacked-up suspension.

The weight matters because your vehicle isn't the only one being transported on the trailer. If your car is heavier than anticipated, it could throw off the balance of the rig, causing problems for the driver. Any additional weight would come with an additional cost, making it more expensive in the long run than just adding another box or two to the moving van.

Don't Forget Auto Transport Safety

Packing your car with a bunch of miscellaneous stuff, in or out of boxes, is also a safety hazard.

Imagine your car is on the top of the trailer, hauling eight other vehicles. The rig hits an average bump in the road or turns a wide corner. What happens to all the items inside your car?

They become instant projectiles, potentially causing damage to the inside of your own vehicle. Or even worse, they could break one of your windows and cause damage to other cars, both on and off the trailer. They could even damage other things you have packed into the car. Is it worth the risk?

It Helps the Driver, Too

Think, too, about the transport company's driver. He has to get your car up onto the trailer as quickly and safely as possible.

If you have packed your vehicle within an inch of the ceiling, how is he going to see when he backs the vehicle off the trailer at your destination? What if your items shift, making it impossible for him to get into your car without damage to the car, your items or the driver himself? Add to it the risk caused by shifting loads within your vehicle, which could cause the trailer to become unstable, running the risk of jackknifing or overturn.

Bottom Line: Don't Pack Your Car To the Brim

We want your experience moving your vehicle to be the best possible, as if you've done it yourself, without the time, hassle and headaches of actually transporting your car yourself. Why ruin it by adding cost to the transport or potential danger to the trip? Keep your personal items where they belong – together in the moving van – and let us handle your vehicle.

You've spent a lot of time and money to pick out the right classic car. Treat it with kindness and hire only the best, most experienced company. Choose DAS.
