DAS FAQ: Is Shipping My Car More Eco-Friendly Than Driving It Myself?

Car shipping process | FAQs

Jack and Ellen met several years ago when they both worked at a solar/wind power company. One of the things that drew them together, obviously, was their concern for the environment.

Given their environment-friendly nature, it was no surprise that they bought an eco-friendly house and started bicycling to work after they finally got married. Jack and Ellen made it a habit of leaving their hybrid car in the garage except for grocery runs and dinner with friends. They compost, recycle, reuse and overall try to live with as little footprint as possible.

It was a big surprise, then, when their company decided to move from Austin, Texas to Boise, Idaho. Boise was going to be a big change from central Texas. Aside from the cold, snowy winters, they would need to use their car more than they had in Austin. They agreed to the move, though, because they loved the idea of a new adventure in an area filled with natural beauty.

When it came time to get things ready for the move, they called DAS and asked about how eco-friendly it was to use an auto transport company compared to driving their car themselves. The car had very little mileage and they knew it was comfortable, but what would make less of an impact on the environment – driving the car themselves or hiring DAS to move it for them? Doesn't using a big tractor-trailer to move vehicles have more impact than driving the vehicles individually?

Actually no. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, transportation alone – cars, buses, trucks, motorcycles, and so forth – is the second largest source of carbon dioxide emissions in the U.S., more than manufacturing and domestic (home) emissions (http://www.epa.gov/climatechange/ghgemissions/gases/co2.html).

In 2011, transportation accounted for 31 percent of the total carbon dioxide emissions and 26 percent of the total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. Most people average 30 miles of driving a day or less, but driving a car, from starting the car to its destination, produces more greenhouse gasses than any other activity on the planet, even if that car is a hybrid car.

So how does using a vehicle transport company help the environment? The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that, by transporting an average of 100,000 vehicles per year, vehicle owners who hire auto transport companies save 2.9 million gallons of fuel and reduce greenhouse gases by 38.2 million pounds. (www.DOE.gov). When you also take into account the fact it would take three days for Jack and Ellen to drive to Boise, not only does the expense add up, but so does the impact on the environment.

In the end, the couple chose to move their hybrid car to Boise using DAS. They're happy to report the move went smoothly, and they're enjoying the fresh air and wide open spaces of their new home close to their office in Boise, which comes complete with a hybrid car charging station.
