Need to move your car this summer? Tips on how to select the right auto shipper

Choosing an auto shipper

Summer moving season is here. You’ve got the packers and movers all lined up. But what are you supposed to do with your car? Hire an auto shipper.

Car shipping has increased in popularity in recent years, largely due to the changing job market (impatient employers), the rising price of gas and a more green-conscious society.

DAS, the oldest and largest auto shipper in the U.S., has provided the following tips to make selecting a car shipper easier:

Auto Transport Average Move Time

The average move time is anywhere from 2 to 14 days, even if the car isn’t being shipped far. This is because auto carriers typically drive standard routes across the U.S., according to DAS. So the sooner you can get your car in the hands of a reputable auto shipper, the sooner your car can be slated for a specific route.

Price for Car Transport

DAS advises that although you can always find a cheaper option, reputable car transport companies will cost an average of $800 - $1000 to ship a vehicle. When comparing prices online, pick up the phone and call the company. If you can’t get someone on the phone now, you may not be able to get them on the phone once they have your car.

Determine your priorities

Do you absolutely need your car to arrive by a certain date? If so, consider selecting expedited delivery service, which moves your vehicle to priority status and ensures it will arrive when it’s fitting for you. Or is a competitive price your #1 goal? If so, ask the shipper how you can trim the cost. DAS offers customers a reduced price for dropping off and picking up the vehicle at one of their licensed partner facilities. This cuts down on the time and labor involved in shipping each car.

Auto Shipping Vehicle Protection

Also, be sure you are aware of the necessary steps should your car get damaged. When DAS quotes a shipping price, it includes vehicle protection up to $50,000 worth of physical damage coverage, and serves as primary coverage to better protect customers; all handled by DAS’ licensed in-house vehicle protection team.

What Not To Forget When Shipping a Car

A few additional things to keep in mind when shipping a car include:

  • Back-up Plan: Rental Car
Once you’ve scheduled your car transport, determine if you will need a rental car and place a reservation, even if it’s just as a back-up plan. If for some reason your car does not arrive on time, due to inclement weather let’s say, and you are starting a new job or have an important appointment scheduled; you don’t want the added stress of wondering how you are going to get there. Be prepared. You can always cancel the rental reservation.

  • Don’t Ship Personal Belongings
What personal belongings can you transport inside your car? The answer is none. Filling your car with personal belongings creates a safety issue for the transport driver, can cause harm to the vehicle if the items are loose and puts other vehicles on the shipment at risk for damage.

Always remember that trust and safety are the most important factors when transporting a car.
