Not All Car Shipping Companies Are Equal

Car shipping process

Car shipping companies come in all shapes and sizes. Like most companies, some are large, some smaller. Some car shipping companies only transport within a specific region, while others will ship cars internationally. Newer car shipping companies may not have the experience, but they offer more services, or only ship one type of car.

It's always important to do your homework when it comes to picking the right car shipping company. Reading auto transport reviews and asking around are critical to finding the right car shipping company. How do you differentiate between then? The differences may make all the difference

Here are some ways to determine which car shipping company is right for you:

Scope of Coverage

Some car shipping companies will only ship within a specific region or state, while others can even ship a car internationally. If you're just moving a state away, hiring a regional car shipping company may suit your needs; why pay for more than you need? On the other hand, hiring a nationwide auto transport company would be your best bet if your move is more than the next state over.

Also look at the types of cars a car shipping company deals with. If you're shipping a vintage or antique car, you'll want to make sure the company has the experience to do it right.

Years of Experience

New car shipping companies spring up every day and most are very good. The good ones, even those born yesterday, will have experienced drivers as well as bonding and insurance in place to protect your precious cargo.

That being said, it is important that, before you sign on the dotted line, you find out if those running the company have experience shipping cars, outside the company you're looking at. Someone who just starts a car shipping company because they think it'll be a good money maker isn't going to give you the service you deserve as much as someone who perhaps worked as a driver for another company, worked his way up through the ranks and is now running his own show.

Experience counts, especially with long hauls; a proven track record will show you how a car shipping company deals with the ups and downs of a typical haul as well as how they deal with the good, bad and ugly of the industry.

Services Offered

Local car shipping companies may only offer one or two services, which is fine if that's all you need. But make sure you get a list of services offered up front, in writing, before you commit to a company. Then, do a side-by-side comparison of several auto transport companies, just to compare apples to apples, so to speak.

Vehicle Protection

Does each car shipping company you're looking at provide their own protection for your vehicle? You may have your own auto insurance coverage, but car shipping companies should have their own coverage, to protect you in case something happens while the car is in their hands. If they don't, or they tell you you're covered by your own insurance, walk away. It's a major red flag.

Types of Vehicles Shipped

Each car shipping company has its specialties; some ship only vintage cars, while others ship only trucks or SUVs. Be sure the company you're looking at has the appropriate trailers for the type of vehicle you're shipping and that they've got the experience with each type.
