Three Ways To Make Sure You've Picked the Best Vehicle Shipping Company

Auto Transport | Car shipping process | Choosing an auto shipper | Industry Information

The U.S. car transport industry is one of the biggest sectors of the shipping industry in the world. Although this means that Americans have tons of vehicle shipping options available, it also means that choosing the right shipping service can get overwhelming.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind when you need to find a shipping service and don't know where to start:

Check Their Paperwork and Credentials

All U.S. car shipping companies are required to be licensed by the Department of Transportation (DOT). They should have a licensing number to prove that they are registered.

Each company should have something called an "MC number" when they become licensed, and a legitimate vehicle transport service will readily provide potential customers with this number. Once you have it, you can search for it on the official DOT website, to make sure that the company's license is real and is active.

If you come across a car shipping service that doesn't have an MC number, or claims to have one but doesn't want to share it, that's not a good sign.

Find Them on the BBB Website

The shipping industry tends to be pretty unregulated (compared to other service markets), but a trustworthy vehicle shipping company will almost certainly be registered with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), just like any other legitimate business.

A BBB membership isn't required for car transport services, but it's another way to be sure that a company is legitimate. In addition, the BBB’s website provides a forum for customers to give unbiased comments about the company.

The company has no control over these customer comments, and you shouldn't be scared away by a few negative complaints -- a company that has tons of positive feedback and looks too good to be true can be just as sketchy as a company with tons of negative feedback.

Get Creative: Leave No Stone Unturned

You can also do some research on your own if you're unsure about an auto shipping company. Most providers will have some sort of physical office where they conduct business, and you might be able to stop by and see it for yourself. Check Google Maps first to see if it looks like a legit logistics business on Street View.

Or, you can simply do a Google search for the company's name. There are plenty of forums where people post news about business scams. Should you find the company name on one of these forums, you may want to stay away from it.

Keep Calm and Ship that Car

Most importantly, don't let yourself get so overwhelmed by your choices that you decide not to go with a car shipping service at all. Whether you're making a big family move and you have multiple cars on hand, or whether you've just bought/sold a valuable car and it's currently sitting somewhere on the other side of the country, an auto shipping service will help you cut down on time, money, and stress.

When in doubt, trust DAS and the company’s experience moving vehicles for more than half a century. When you’re ready to learn more, just submit an easy “Request for Quote” form from any page on our website.
