Transporting A Classic Car

Car shipping process | Choosing an auto shipper

You’ve looked around for the perfect classic car to add to your garage. It may be that cherry-apple red 1963 Mustang or one of the few remaining Edsels – whatever the make and model, it’s yours now.

But it’s located across the country. How do you get it back to your garage? What special considerations do you need to plan for when choosing a car shipping company to move your new pride and joy?

Not All Companies Can Ship Classic Cars

Shipping a classic car can be tricky. Not all car shipping companies can move an antique or classic car, so it pays to ask questions and get just the right company. Some things to take into consideration:

Transport Type

While you may ship your late-model car in an open trailer, you will want to choose a company that can ship your baby in a closed trailer and not all companies offer that type of transport. You don’t want your investment to be damaged by the elements, especially if you’re moving it more than one state away.

Position On The Trailer

Especially when shipping a classic car, where your car is on the trailer is important. While your new purchase may be in “cherry” condition, older cars are more likely to leak oil or other fluids. It can, then, be worth the extra money to have your car put on the top level of the trailer, so other cars do not leak into yours.

Insurance

Reputable car shipping companies carry insurance to protect your vehicle against damage while on the road, but it may not cover the added value of a vintage car. Ask the company you choose whether additional coverage is available; if not, call your auto insurance agent and get your own extra coverage.

Classic Car Shipping: The Extras

As we’ve seen, shipping a classic car isn’t as easy as shipping a late-model vehicle. Some other items to remember include all of the following:

Pre-Move and Post-Move Photos

Whether you’ve just purchased your classic car or you’re moving a beauty you’ve restored yourself, make sure to take plenty of photos or videos before and after the move. You don’t want the car shipping company to use the excuse that any dents or dings were a result of the car being old.

Discounts

While discounts may be available when shipping newer-model cars, you don’t want to go cheap when it comes to move a classic vehicle. As we’ve said, you actually may end up paying more for shipping, but if you can get a discount for paying cash or for a longer transit time, it may save you in the end.

Place of pickup and delivery

If you’ve opted to pick your classic car up at a drop-off lot, make sure you make arrangements for the driver to call you when he’s almost to the delivery point so you can be there when the car is unloaded. Once it’s off the trailer, then do a thorough walk-through, take pictures and don’t sign anything until sure there’s new damage.

Managing Classic Car Transport Services

As you go through the quote to ship your classic car, read it carefully and write down any questions you have. You have the right to ask questions and expect answers. The better prepared you are, the more smoothly your move will go.

You’ve spent a lot of time and money to pick out the right classic car. Treat it with kindness and hire only the best, most experienced company. Choose DAS.
