Transporting Hybrid and Electric Cars: Not All Carriers Do It

Subscribe July 24, 2013
Choosing an auto shipper

It seems like hybrid and electric cars are everywhere. Some cities have so many they're seeing an uptick in the number of pedestrian/auto accidents, because electric cars don't make any noise as they move along the roadway, at least not the engine noise we're used to from cars.

So then comes the question: What are the challenges of transporting hybrid and electric cars? Do all auto transport companies carry hybrids and electric cars? What do you need to know before choosing an auto transport company to move your vehicle?

Challenges

A recent article in "Automotive News" (http://www.autonews.com/article/20130621/BLOG06/306219952/lithium-ion-batteries-pose-transport-challenges#axzz2X8XPBX85) highlighted the dangers associated with hybrid and electric cars, specifically when it comes to transporting them – the lithium ion batteries. The batteries used to power an electric car are made from the same material as rechargeable batteries you can buy in the store for your consumer electronics, only bigger.

But, just as rechargeable batteries for your remote are heavier than the standard throw-away batteries, the lithium ion batteries used in hybrid cars are heavier. So how does a car transport company deal with the extra weight?

Some auto transport carriers have started charging extra for moving hybrid/electric cars. Their reasoning is that it takes more equipment, and more care is necessary or extra licensing is needed to transport cars with lithium ion batteries across state lines.

The truth is, hybrid/electric cars can be transported the same as traditional gasoline combustion engine vehicles. The equipment used to transport cars is the same, regardless of what type of vehicle it is.

Obviously, the lighter the weight the better, but the manner in which a hybrid/electric car is transported is no different. And there are no additional insurance or licensing needed to transport the lithium ion batteries across state lines.

What You Need To Know

Some car transport companies will not carry hybrid/electric cars. But why?

For the most part, it's because they don't know enough about them to know there is no difference in transporting a traditional car vs. a hybrid/electric car. The mechanics of the transport are exactly the same – a car is a car. If an auto transport company is reputable, it won't mean a thing.

So don't be fooled if a car transport company tells you there are extra charges for moving your hybrid/electric car or that they don't transport that type of vehicle because it's too dangerous. Regardless of the type of vehicle, care must still be taken to ensure the car is safely loaded and transported to its end destination. All the appropriate insurances must be obtained and an experienced, careful driver needs to be behind the wheel.

If you have those things, as you will with DAS, you have everything you need to move your hybrid/electric car.
